most legal documents have your name printed below the signature you must sign the same as the printed name. regardless of if it is your whole name or just first initials the signature must match the printed name below it.
for many things such as loans that are insured you usually have to sign a page that list all your aliases. when you open a bank account or sign your drivers license or any form that does not have your name pre-printed you sign with your normal signature.

You can use variations of your name, as long as you disclose this use. You would not be able to get out of a mortgage for example, by claiming you signed as Mel rather than Melvin. There are some federal documents that require you to use your full legal name, but even if you don't there is no real sanction or problem with the document - if you signed it, then it is legal.

Legally, your signature is ANY mark you use consistently with the intent of that mark being your signature. The letter 'X' CAN be your legal signature. Based on your question, I will guess you normally sign 'Mel' instead of Melvin. This is perfectly legal. I know a number of people whose legal signature is not legible, but is distinctive.

For legal documents, you need to sign your birth name. For anything else, sign it as though it was a note to a friend. I usually sign my name as "D(last name)" and that has never been a problem.
