The thing wildlife managers use for coyotes is a roller along the top of the fence.
Use a piece of pipe (pvc will probably work). Just put a pole along the top with the pipe over it. It rolls and the dog can't get a grip and falls.
It may not work with a 4ft fence. Many dogs can simply jump that high.
A angled top might do the work, if the dog would have to be under it before jumping up. But dogs are good problem solvers when you have a goal (like escape).
Try looking for fencing idea under pest management, coyotes. You will find well tested ways to make fences unclimbable. (UC Davis IPM websites.

If you use barbed wire the dog could get tangled in it. Electric fencing would stop the dog for sure but you would need to make sure you can use electric fencing in your local.
An invisible fence set just inside of the fencing might work but some people are not comfortable using the collar on their dog.
Otherwise, reinforce good behavior with treats, etc. When he goes over the fence do not reward him.

The best thing to do is to train him NOT to jump over. Besides some dogs can literally climb over 6 to 8 foot tall fences if they ar so inclined. My dog did the 6 foot climb.

Get an invisible fence installed.
This will work for many dogs, and even if you decide to get rid of it later, if you line it just inside the fence perimeter it will teach the dog not to go near the actual fence.

An anti-climbing top can be as simple as PVC plastic piping or large rubber tubes (at least 5-6" in diameter) cut lengthwise down the center, and placed all along the top of all of your fence. This makes a curved, slippery surface that a dog - or cat - can't get a grip on to get over the top of the fence.

Go to www.invisiblefence.com and try it. It goes underground and and sensor on the dogs collar detects when it goes over the"invisible fence" and gives your dog a small but noticeable shock. I bet you have a Jack Russell Terrier those little boogers jump 4-5 feet up in the air trust me i know i have a jack Russell. No i don't have a "invisible fence" but I'm thinking of getting one. Hope this helps.

You can train a dog - but pups are curious - and get two siblings - well double the trouble. Great dogs - training easily. I am looking for instructions of using PVC pipe for a coyote fence topper for a chain link fence - and don t see one anywhere. Help?

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/fPf5r
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

You have to catch the dog doing it, grab him by the coller, and put him in "time out" right away! I did this to Max, my 120lb golden retriever twice and he never jumped the split rail fence in the backyard again. He still trys to crawl under the fence once in a while.

You could put this question in the dog section too. Someone there might have other suggestions.
