Why was he so popular? His songs weren't all that great. His voice was fairly mediocre.

Of the singers / entertainers of his day, I think Dean Martin was the far better singer / entertainer and far more charismatic. So why was Sinatra held in such high regard?

Sinatra took himself seriously and worked on his craft. His syncopation alone was innovative for its day. But he was a big personality. Martin didn't take himself seriously and didn't seem to care if people thought he was minor compared to Sinatra.

as the old expression goes.. you had to be there.

His songs WERE that great, and still are. People who used to like bands from the 80s (for instance,) are often embarrassed to admit it. Sinatra's singing can be enjoyed over and over again.

Sinatra had a way with a lyric that let you know he had been there.. Dean Martin always sort of held himself at arm's length emotionally. You were also always pretty sure Dean Martin was plastered.

Sinatra also had a feel for choosing great material and using great arrangers.. He worked with the best. It was a total package.

If you have to ask, you'll never understand. He's Sinatra. It's not tangible.

It's like Hendrix...if you don't just "get it", you never will.

He had a style all his own. If you don't like it, that's ok.
