As a Vietnam Vet, I will never forget the foolhardiness we exhibited in both conflicts. We fouled up in Nam, and W, having never gone, did not learn from history.

i think of you're lacking an significant factor. the elementary denominator between those 2 wars is that the politicians tried to combat it --- with the comparable consequence. as quickly as a conflict is underway, the appropriate element a toddler-kisser can do is to step back and enable the army do their element. The politicians understand little sufficient approximately each and every thing else yet seem unwilling to maintain their palms off some thing they understand truthfully no longer something approximately. If the politicians had no longer stopped the army after the 1st Iraqui conflict, we would not have the themes we've. If the politicians had no longer demobbed the Iraqui military, coming up a generally used unemployed yet armed mob, we would not have the themes we've. If the politicians had no longer tried to combat the conflict at a budget with too few troops we would not have the themes we've. With all the political meddling happening, this is impossible to respond to your unique question on the topic of the commonly used of the army or their approaches. They by no ability have been given a raffle to apply them --- in the event that they had fought the politicians they'd have been retired, so maximum of them did no longer.

Is this even a question? Yes, of course it will. People haven't learned from wars for a long time, and it's painful to read through history and gain a full understanding of it. This has been going on far longer than the Vietnam War, and will continue until someone gets a clue.
People learn some small things from each war, take this and that lesson from it, but never learn the cardinal lessons that prevent that sort of war from happening ever again.

The sad truth here is No!
You're in too deep to pull out and just brush it under the carpet.
The world has been watching and the USA is all but standing alone, there's no more NATO.
GW and his Chaps have made a right little mess of the balance of power thing.
It's going to take a lot a tidying up after this party!

For those of us old enough to remember Vietnam, the futility has not been forgotten. Someday, there will be an Iraq Memorial in D.C., so those who were needlessly sacrificed under similar dubious circumstances will be etched in stone.
