Don't let others scare you. If you take an open water course, you'll be taught the different techniques that will enable you to equalize your ears and sinus cavities. There WON'T be an issue if you follow your training. The people that have hurt themselves, didn't follow that training. Almost all people will have "popping" in the ears, but the trick is to equalize BEFORE you feel discomfort. This you'll learn on the course.

Any scuba certification class will teach you how to correctly clear your ears as you descend. For the vast majority of persons it is not a concern. A very few people with ear problems are at risk. With practice it becomes second nature and you don't even think about it. If you do experience ear pain as you descend, it is very easy to stop, rise up a bit, clear your ears again, then resume your descent. People have problems when they change depth too quickly.

Depends on a lot of things. My eardrums blew up the first time I went below 50 feet because my sinuses are misshapen. ( one cavity larger than the other )

Not a bad idea to get a pre dive checkup. Assuming your ears & sinuses are ok, you should be fine if you equalize like your instructor tells you to.

Yes, they do... or at least, they did... I blew an eardrum on a wreck dive in the Caribbean 20 years ago and I still can't dive any deeper than to clean the bottom of my boat, to this day.

Me personally, no. But I know someone who has ear problems and can't do it because it hurts too much! As long as you equalize (swallow) this equalizes the pressure inside and outside of your ear.

you have to make them pop or else your eardrums explode on the way down

Not if you pinch your nose and blow then GENTLY try to blow air out of your nose. This equalizes the pressure
