A friend of a friend's baby was born with some slits on her neck that supposedly never closed prior to birth. The mother claims these slits are normal and help the baby to breathe while inside the womb but should close up before birth. Hers didn't.

Since she was born 4 months ago, fluid leaks from these slits and the baby will have to undergo surgery to close these slits or "gills" in a few more months.

Can you shed any light on this? I have never it of it before in my life, and I am 60 years old.

babies do not have 'gills'!! perhaps it is some kind of a rare skin disorder that i have never heard of. i am a pediatric and nursery nurse and i have never heard of that happening or anything i can even relate it to. babies get their oxygen from mom through and exchange in the placenta and the vessels there. as babies grow in the womb they do practice breathing by in haling the amniotic fluid but use no gills of any sort for oxygenation. that is a solid fact! i don't know what may be causing the slits in the baby's throat...sounds odd to me. at any rate...they should be fixed immediately. any open wound is cause for infection. get it looked at by a pediatrician asap!

i have never heard of such a thing. that sounds almost like a practical joke. you would have thought that in all our years as human beings more stories would be out there such as this but i have never heard of "baby gills" its probably not true. i hope its not true. maybe a doctor reading this can shed some light on the issue

It is true. During development of the fetus there is a stage where there are "gills" that appear on the neck and disappear as the fetus develops more fully.

It appears that this child had a "glitch" during fetal development and the "gills" didn't close.
