I can remember several years ago when I was just a kid, I would go up on my grandpa and grandma old place to play. Well one day when I was up there, I saw that someone had dumped some trash out up there. I decided to go through it. I found a wedding set (his and hers) hers had a lot of diamonds in it. His was diamond cut. A big bag of change. His billfold (no ID in it) had about $500.00 in it. Then in amongst their clothes I found the socks, one had a lump in it so checked it out and it had a wad of money in it that would choke a mule. I found all kinds of jewelry besides the wedding set. There was all kinds of rings, bracelets, watches, and necklaces.

Yes I did keep all the stuff that I found. Never said a word to nobody about it either. I did listen to see if anybody said anything about loosing anything. As it turned out, what happened was the couple was getting a divorce. Then as time went on they decided to give it another try. But in the agreement between the two of them, they would get rid of everything they owned and start over fresh. I am the one that made out like crazy over their break up.

I do like to dumpster dive as you never know what you are going to find in there. Although this stuff was just laying on the ground. Like the old saying goes...one mans junk is another mans treasure.

A friend was helping clean out a house after the death of a friend of his, and they were tossing out a trash bag full of old correspondence, and he gave it to me. I found a bunch of vinatge Victorian valentines, and a lot of old stamps on envelopes from the early 1900's! And a stack of old Union Pacific postcards, unused. All collectible, tho I added the valentines to my own collection!

When I was first married, I found a walnut spool bed that someone had put out in the trash, it was broken, and I repaired and refinished it; and an oak drop leaf kitchen table. I still have both.

I also found a diamond ring wedding set, digging in the garden. The diamond is pretty small so I don't imagine it is worth a lot, except maybe to the person who lost it. It was a couple of feet down, so it had to have been a long time ago and I suppose the owner is long gone.

No, I don't search people's trash it is an inefficient use of my limited time and resources. IF I ever found anything valuable which I am sure happens, I'd doubt it'd be worth a "fortune" and once I did I certainly wouldn't be telling anyone about it.

Not in the trash exactly. While bull-raking (clamming) I kept getting my gear hung up on something, after marking the problem with a "marker buoy" I came back the next day with a grapple, snagged it & with my boat going full throttle I broke it free from bottom, dragged it to shore. Went back at low tide to see what it was.Luckly no one found it yet, it turned out to be a 560lb bronze prop. from a large old vessle. Got $2.15lb for it. Over the years Ive dung up all sorts of cool stuff & strange stuff. Weirdest was a human skull back in 1984. Funniest was a "sex toy". Amazing what goes over-board.
