oh, and how would you apply it to the US preventing the aquisition of nuclear warfare?

As for nuclear warfare. Both parties are feared so the maxim is moot. I think that nuclear warfare deserves a new approach. Machiavelli did live a long time ago...
The new maxim should be - "It is better to be alive than dead."
