some of them are definitely... sort of. the government and the mass media have radically exaggerated the danger of terrorism. at one point Al Qeada was a vast network with a network of Blofeldian caves with sleeper cells every where... of course none of this turned out to be true. the irrational fears were whipped up for political gain. same thing as in the cold war. there is a built in bureaucratic mechanism for exaggerating threats in order to jack up defense budgets.

The wars we start are the reason terrorists attack us. Terrorists attacked us because they were angry the US has propped up corrupt dictators in the middle east, played Iran and Iraq off against each other in a war that killed a million people, bombed nearly every country in the Middle East at some point in the last 50 years, built 700+ military bases on the soil of foreign countries, interfered with Middle Eastern politics via the CIA, and so forth. The more recent attempted terrorist attacks were also motivated by the continued occupation of Iraq in which 1 million people have died, and by the occupation of Afghanistan which has gone on for a decade now.

yes, but its the spectacle of terrorism which scares people. events like 9/11and 7/7 were visual atatcks everyone could see, killing thousands of people, whereas the everyday murders happening are only in ones or twos and not seen by many. the fear isnt irratioanl but it is perhaps exagerrated.
i think the other point, though i disagree with war, is that the governments think they can do something about terrorism by starting wars, wheras they find it more difficult to deal with random attacks by 'neighbours'

Fear isn't rational. The US has forgotten how to live with organized violence. Germany, France, the UK, Italy and Spain have had to live with terrorist organization on their home soil for much of the last 50 years. It is quite doable, but it does require some courage from the citizens.
Note that courage isn't rational either ;).

Yes, it is irrational. No one should be afraid of terrorism. If it is going to get you, it will.
Why should anyone wrap themselves in cottonwool because they might die in a terrorist attack - that is irrational.
I for one and not going to live my life in fear - that is what terrorism is all about - fear! The terrorists want us to live in fear - we should not give into them!

Although I know that it is unlikely that I will be involved in a terrorist attack, it IS rational to fear those that have said that they are trying to kill you. I'm not stopped by this fear, but I'm not going to be stupid about it either.

I think it is but I blame the media for that.
We live in a dangerous world and life is full of risk at every corner. I don't live my life hidding under the bed and I plan to enjoy whatever time life gives me.
