Why is everything considered "American culture" predominatly Afro-American derived?

Hip hop, R&B, funk, rock and roll, soul, blues, rag-time, jazz, and gospel music, country and techno. 90% of all the dancemoves.All of the unique American slang words .All the so called "southern food" aka "soul food...American past times such as Basketball, Baseball, and football afro americans hold all the records..

Even german and irish things are still considered foreign..But not Afro-American stuff..Why is that???

We started everything in this country I love Black rock we started it Little Richard all those cats who straightened there hair with lye and rebelled against the system they are the pioneers, the cats which created jazz a music with the same intelligence and notes like classical music...with improvisation, the way we hear Martha Stewart and women on "The View" use the word "Dis"...(even Rush Limbaugh says it now and "whats up?"). Puerto Rico and Central America Central America are you kidding??

Seems you know whats up now the assimilation of Latino culture is being taken the same way Blacks has but acting like the source is "Foreign" just like African Americans..Thats why all of your "Chilli's" commercials and recipes are so called Latin but yet so American. They accept where it comes from initially until that guilt starts setting in. Then they milk the culture for whatever culture they can obtain to act like they created it and copyright it . I mean 5 years ago I couldnt find a Mojito unless at a Latin spot now there everywhere in the mainstream restraunts. This is why they want Justin Timberfake to be considered Cool.

To Mike whites perfected rock is nonsense when most black rock is simply ignored even today and labeled funk I worked in many records stores I know this for a fact. America can only live off its strengths when it stops being racist and situations like Katrina/Jena6 wont happen and every one is considered at the table. Country and western/bluegrass music that comes from Scottish and Irish music? Barbecue that comes from the Caribean indians? Cornbread from the southeastern indians? Bourbon whiskey made by the Scottish settlers? Cole slaw and sauerkraut from the Germans? All the sausages we eat? Nascar? Basketball, baseball and football were invented by white people. The language was invented by white people.
I did not realize that Brett Favre,Jason Elam, Morten Andersen, Gary Anderson,Steve O'Neal, etc (NFL); Pete Rose, Rocky Colavito, Lou Gherig, Don Mattingly, etc. (Baseball) were "afro americans". Sorry all I know about Basketball is that Jordan is black and Byrd is white.

To start with do you mean EVERYTHING or do you mean PREDOMINANTLY? Predominantly allows for there to be some other things.

Of course the Africans contributed a lot to American culture-as did the Europeans and Asians. That is what makes America a great country and gives us our strange culture.

90% of all dance moves? So, Afro Americans are responsible for ballroom dancing, the polka, the swing , ballet.... all that? Hmmmm... and Roger Clemens , Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra are a Afro Amercican baseball greats??? Give me a break... you guys cant hold a candle to the greats from Puerto Rico and Central America in baseball. By the way... how many black NFL quarterbacks can you name??? You have basketball covered, I'll give you that. As for Southern cooking, the Germans and Cechs had a bigger influence. Kolaches is not a black dish. Neither is turkey and dressing.

Uh... Music and sports are not the extent of American culture, and just to be clear, holding the record in a sport doesn't mean that the sport was derived from that person.

I would spend a bit more time broadening your cultural horizons before making snap judgments and promoting racism.

Sooooo.........Are you claiming NASCAR, gun racks, skin-tight Wranglers, Bud Lite, going muddin', flannel shirts, peroxide beehives, breast implants, plaid, golf, tennis, smog, preppy culture, elevator music, Starbucks, surfing, bermuda shorts, chewing tobacco, or Paris Hilton?

"American" culture is a blend of dozens of different cultures from all over the world. And why is it that the only "achievements" that anyone can ever connect to black people have to do with entertainment or sports, and sometimes food? Are we capable of nothing of substance, such as business, scientific, or academic pursuits? You really don't think much of us, do you?

You compare two different things... rock & roll was invented by black musicians but was perfected by whites. Basketball, on the other hand, was invented by a white Canadian, while baseball and football are American adaptations of games invented by Europeans. But in all three of these sports, as you mention, most (not all) of the records are held by black men.

The way I see it, it's only through a blend of all of our strengths that we can truly make something great.
