EDIT:
Interesting answers. Some of them are thought provoking. A few of them are basically the same answer.
It's important to know who is responsible so we will know better what is the appropriate response.
From what her party said Al-Qaida is not responsible.

EDIT:
Many excellent answers.
It is true that Allah knows best about what happened.
At the same time we Muslims need to understand what is happening in the world... especially in Muslim countries... so that we will be in a better position to know what to do.
It is difficult to choose the best answer. The most excellent answer would be one which combined a number of comments that were made in a number of answers.

Assalamu Alaikum...

Good and interesting question. I would say U.S. intel had some role in it. It was probably some corrupt Muslim who actually did it, but who was hired as a mercenary by the U.S. (C.I.A. or other U.S. intel) and/or Zionists.

The Israeli Government (Zionist) are occupying and killing the people of Palestine. The Israelis have no right or even no claim of any land in Palestine, including the so called 'Israel'. I won't be surprised if zionists loved living there. I would say though that the whole problem with the unrest in the Middle East is because of 'Israel'. Iran wouldn't act towards it the way it was and/or is if it come to being.

It is forbidden in Islam for any woman to hold a top leadership status like a king or president. Bhutto, if she was elected, she would be going against Islamic Law, and she herself is a corrupt Muslim. Good Muslims probably understand what's happening around the world around them better than anyone else, regardless if they're living there or not.

ah well as the theory goes.. anything evil has got something to do with american and israeli agenda or al-qaeda!

the thing is that she did not had just one or two enemies. popular people like her have several opponents. some were in rival political parties who might have gone on to eliminate her, some were part of the terrorists that are present in the fringes of pakistan and some were of course alqaeda and some international agencies (american or israeli? probably). then there are also speculations of secret agencies being involved in this..

so whatever the case, without an independent and unbiased investigation that produces results on time, we really can not reach to a certain conclusion and will be left groping in the dark amid all these speculations and rumors.

unfortunately pakistan's history shows that the killings of popular figures have never been conclusively investigated. liaquat ali khan, the first prime minister of pakistan was assassinated at the same place by a person who was shot at immediately after he killed the great leader. no result of the investigation has ever been achieved. Ziaul Haq died 'mysteriously' in a plane crash and no one could figure out how. let's just hope we are able to find the truth behind Benazir's death.

I think the most responsible man for the death of Benazir Bhutto is the President of Pakistan e.g Musharaf because the government should give security and safety to all of its people including formerly the prime minister Benazir Bhutto..The governmant has the obligation to mange the security and order in through out the country. The government should prevent other organization and other countries to arrange terrorism in Pakistan.such as Al Qaeda,Taliban,Mr
Bush and Israelis and whatever elements.

People who are blaming Musharaff have no clue or they dont think rational in my opinion. That guy has been in so much pressure by USA and EU. In reality, if anyone of you were him, would u kill Bhutto and create more chaos as it already been so much trouble in the country and also America was supporting her and showing interest to be an elected PM of the country. Also he resigned from the military so now he knows he doesnt have a power to do whatever he wants to do as he was in the power. Come on people think wisely, Even if you wants to be in power you try to make things smooth and easy so you can rule without any distraction. According to my opinion, he must be in severe confined state as he has to control the country sitation not to make it worst and listen to America as well as people who are against him and most that how he can still be in power b/c he might knw too after this he is through. It just the matter of time b/c militant tried to assassinate him twice and they are still looking for a chance. Peace!

Reports said she was killed when she tried to duck back into the vehicle, and the shock waves from the blast smashed her head into a lever attached to the sunroof, fracturing her skull.

This is how she was killed. Who is responsible?

We all are.

Those of us who encourage hatred, racism, classicism, religious intolerance, etc.

Those of us who are good people, yet stand by and say and do nothing.

Those of us who are so ignorant we don't even know Bhutto was a woman.

Those of us who are so ill informed about geography they are getting Palestine and Pakistan mixed up - (I understand that Israel has a lot to do with a lot of crap that happens but they are two different countries!)

Those of us who are so apathetic that they are just answering questions for the 2 points and asking why should we Americans care -

We should care because WE caused many of the problems that are happening today -
WE trained Al-Quida in the 80's when Russia was at war with them,
WE support Israel to the point of letting them have nukes and at the same time bombing other countries who we accuse (proof or not) of trying to acquire nukes.
WE should care because OUR blowback has helped to create a situation where you have a terrorist organization who has proven capabilities of great violence in an unstable country that has nukes. (Al-Quida, 9/11, Pakistan)
WE should care for our children - what kind of world do you want your son or daughter to grow up in?
WE are in trouble - when the leading stories for today are how much traffic there is at the mall as after-Christmas shoppers descend and what Danny-Lynn got for Christmas.

Do what you can - reach out and learn from others, different is not bad - it's just different. Contact your local news station/Paper and let them know you want a world news section that is more comprehensive, or go on-line to get your news. Contact your congresspeople - let them know you do not support sticking US fingers where they don't belong, just for the opportunity to line a few pockets.

Look at a map - then look at a photograph of our planet - the map is man made and has borders to defend - the earth is created by the Creator (whatever name your faith identifies) and the only borders I see are those naturally between land and water.

Who will you follow - man or the Creator?

It is most likely that the US government has done it.

However, whosoever is done it, has done it with sheer political motives behind the deadly move.

President Pervaiz Musharraf encountered Benazir Bhutto by letting in another corrupt leader, Nawaz Sharif, to contest elections. Nawaz Sharif contesting Benazir Bhutto would have split the power among a throng of political parties in Pakistan giving none a chance to form government with reasonable majority.

This incidence will give Pak Peoples Part a chance to acquire more votes provided the elections are held on the dates announced.

It is also likely that it is her own party member as Constitution of Pakistan does not allow anyone to become a Prime Minister for more than twice & Ms Bhutto was not willing to give over for the leadership of her political party. How long Mr Zardari (Her Husband) could expect to play behind the curtains.

Indeed the stakes for religious leaders are highest to be considered suspects.

Towards bottom line, the political party of Benazir Bhutto will get most votes, as Nawaz Sharif is no longer participating in the upcoming elections.

You got to be kidding me..There are so many different groups over there trying to make another country go wrong and it has. The country is in a serious level of up evil and ac cursing or bring the presidents name in the same as Islams is totally out there. The Israeli government is a strong democracy and Bhutto stood for freedom and her people. Why would you think a President would even do this. You better get a better understanding of how those countries really are over there. That is the problem with many in this country, so out of touch with how other countries are in the middle east. There are so many different groups of people and the bad ones want to make the world a worst place to be living in. Let us not forget there have not been any attacks in the US since the president has been so strong against terrorism in the world. Simply was one of those groups who is against democracy and loves to have not peace in the world. It was probably a outside group because she is a women and pertaining to there religion they do not assignation women. I the president..no matter how you feel about his polical stands he is out President...Don't take it personnal but the question was a little out there and heading toward the wrong place.

The guy that pulled the trigger. The Pakistani security service that didn't stop it. Bhutto herself for returning when the situation was precarious, and obviously so. Everyone supporting the Musharraf dictatorship, since that polarized Pakistan and damaged the chances of democracy in that country. The war in Afghanistan, as it pushed religious fervour higher, and drove organized Islamic militants into Pakistan where they found a hearing.

I would like to make an unbiased reply.

Firstly, recall that during the last unsuccessful attempt on her life, she claimed that she knew her enimies, and wrote to president. It is belived, her suspects were certain retired military officer and some group of elements. Her letter to government indicating her fears did not become public.

George Bush could not have killed Ms Bhutto. Because firstly, she was encouraged by George Bush to return to Palistan. Bush adminstration saw in Benazir the future PM of democratic Pakistan.

It isn't so much who did it for me

As it is - what - will come of it

All this time people have drawn parallels to ww 2

No no world war one - stalemated powers entrenched along old lines and now an assassination of a possible "successor" to a nation that to the west must seem as insignificant as Arch Duke Ferdinand of Sarajevo did in 1914

I mean no disrespect to anyone but who remembers who pulled the trigger in 1914 ? We all remember the world war though don't we
