and I want a Gypsy Vanner. We can at least dream, can't we???
Friesians go for an insane amout of money, I swear I have never seen so many zeros in my life!!! I would stick with maybe a percheron cross or maybe a morgan/warmblood, they won't be too big but won't be a pony either. Morgans also have that drafty look about them. As far as I know, any horse can be friendly if you bond with it.

OMG...these babies cost an ungodly amount of money. I knew one person through an online forum that bought one. Her husband gave her a choice between a Friesian and a new BMW...she chose the horse. Didn't regret it, but it gives you an idea of the price you're looking at.
Though they are gorgeous to be sure, you might be better off looking at other breeds have similar personality traits. Most of the draft horses are fairly gentle and friendly. Percherons, Belgians, and the like. Percheron crosses are becoming popular for riding horses. Plus they have the feathering that Friesians have and can also come in black...but at a more affordable price.
Mustangs have pretty good reputations and some have the big boned look of a draft horse about them. Plus they're rather affordable if you have the experience to work with a green horse.
Arabians are hot, but are known for forming fairly close bonds with their owners. And they have that long mane-flowy look that Friesians and Andalusians have...in a smaller package.

There are a few Friesian breeders in most states, but they don't breed many young horses--the market is still very high priced for these horses.
You can check out rescue groups, and cross breed Friesians (they're crossed with Bashkir curly coats sometimes), which may help get a lower priced horse for you, but figure on spending good money to get a purebred.
Try googling some breeders online and look at their photo sections and check out their 'news' which should include prices for individual animals.
They're big, they have short bodies, they move nicely, but they aren't as easily tractable as quarter horses. You'll need to have good riding skills for them.

Cuddly and protective are adjectives more appropriate for dogs than horses. Horses can have a big and generous heart and some are naturally more gentle and laid back. It really is an individual thing. Choose a horse based on why you want it and for what: english riding, jumping, team penning, trail riding, driving, western pleasure, barrel racing etc. Almost any breed can produce a good-dispositioned horse. Let an experienced horseman who knows your riding abilities assist you in finding a suitable 4 legged friend.

If you want a Friesan, you'd better start saving your money. They are EXPENSIVE horses. They are lovely and sweet, but cost a LOT more than most breeds.
Arabians are the most affectionate breed. They aren't huge, but they are friendly and more people oriented than most other breeds. Just so you know!
And don't believe when people tell you all Arabians are crazy! NOT true!!
