Hey Tommy;
I live in and around the Chicago area, which means I have to deal with a lot of light pollution in order to see the night sky...
Drag.
There was one August night I'll never forget, though...
My (then) wife and I were out at around 2:00am to watch the Persied meteor shower (Aug. 12/13) and she just happened to look toward the north...
She asked me, "What the fuzz (paraphrase) is that?"
She had noticed the sky changing colors, almost FLASHING colors...
She'd never seen the Aurora Borealis, (and I'd only seen it a few time before).
It was absolutely brilliant!
The most talented artist of all time wouldn't have been able to re- create the pallette of colors I witnessed that night... let alone the really cool meteor shower!
Awesome!
Cheers, and Happy New Year!
Bobby

I believe that this year's Nebraska Star Party is the first time in the last six years I've been to the event that I haven't seen one during the weeklong event.
My favorite one though was the one in May 2005 that I could see clearly across the sky in Lincoln, Nebraska. I'm posting the link to the photos I took of that one and the one in November 2004 taken from the same location. Mind you, the location was on the South side of town, close to the center, so I had to see this through lots of light, much of it you can see in the streetlights that were around me at the apartment complex I was living in at the time. One of my favorite photos is a panoramic I took at the time.

No, I am missing that. But I would like to see a huge one, green, high in the sky, slowly moving like a curtain, in silence, opening some mouths in awe, while others sleep in their beds having sweet dreams.

Once, about 30 years ago during a cruise to Alaska.
Absolutely amazing. And totally unforgettable.

I've only seen it in pictures.
the ones on Jupiter look amazing, they're something like 100 times the size of earth's.
also it's moons interact with the field making some changes in the light structure.

yes, many times. It can sometimes be quite spectacular, almost scary (more eerie I think would be a better description).
