Action undertaken by the British military authorities during the WW I and after the war helped determine the shape of the new Iraqi state and the course of events during the postwar years.
British control of Iraq, for long years for several reasons inlcluding domintaing the land in the way to india, which was the most importand english colony. preventing any kind of new union between Islamic countries including middle eastern countries which mostly are arab land, establishing a new country in Palestine to piece together jew from all over the world specialy from Europe,(In 1917 the British Foreign Secretary, Arthur Balfour, had supported a Jewish home in Palestine.) and capturing local resources from occupied colonies as a prize of winning the WW I.
After the war, Britain debated Colonial policy in Iraq of direct control to protect British interests in the Persian Gulf and India. How ever the nationalists were demanding independence. In 1921 Britain offered indirect control with the establishment of an Arab government under British mandate in Iraq.....
Obviously due to the increased UK and France and Russian greed after the WWI the region of ME have suffered instabilities and conflicts in the years ahead.

They didn't exactly invade the ME. After WWI, the Ottoman Empire fell because of their alignment with the Axis/Germany. Winston Churchill helped separate the boundaries for the individual countries, but other people/countries were also involved. They had more of a hand in Iran than Iraq.

Turkey and Germany were allies in WWI and the UK had to prevent their control of their access to the oil fields. Middle East history is determined today a great deal by what happened decades ago.

I don't remember the answer to this so I'll enjoy reading the answers and hope someone posts a non-biased version .
But no matter the reason , that was a very different world and any conclusions must be tempered to take the era into consideration .

sigh to the people that said terrorism.....but yeah it was the partition of Ottoman Empire after world war 1. Similar to the way the Austro-Hungarian empire and German Empire lost territories after world war 1.
