I have a Flame Gourami that is starting to look fat and she is in a tank with 1 paradise Gourami. There used to be a red Dwarf gourami and another flame gourami with her but, they both died a couple of weeks ago, Could she be pregnant? How long are they pregnant? Are they livebearers or do they lay eggs? These are my only Gouramis, so I have not researched the spawning of them yet, can you help?

I know what "bloat" is and that is not it, it is just her belly that is fat, she looks like my angelfish do right before they spit out eggs.

Well I can concur with one thing, impregnation is out. As the others have said, Gourami are not live bearers, they are a bubble nest builder. The picture you have up though is hard to tell. It has both features of male and female actually. The dorsal fin touching the tail makes me want to say male, but where the roundedness is, that is typically where I've seen the females round at. I'd probably lean towards bloat myself with that long dorsal fin.

Has your Gourami exhibited any behavoirs out of the norm for it? What diet have you been feeding it? If you have other community fish, not feeding it might be a bit tricky to achieve short of isolating it. Once you get him clear of the bloatedness, I'd try a varied diet, if you are not already doing so. Mix in a staple flake food, spiralina coated, and also use blood worms and brine shrimp so not any one food is being over used.

First of all, you have a male, not a female, so that rules out the option of it carrying eggs. That leaves you with constipation and dropsy.

Dwarf Gouramis are susceptible to constipation due to their vertical compression (which causes more winding in their digestive tract), and it is very easy to treat. Simply don't feed the fish for at least 3 days to let it "catch up" and you should see it disappear. If this doesn't work, try adding freshwater aquarium salt (which often helps to dislodge any blockages and relieves stress).

If any scales around the abdomen (the area of swelling) are pointing away from the body (like pine cones), it is almost certainly dropsy, which is, at this point, next to impossible to cure. Keep the water pristine (if that means daily water changes, so be it) and keep the temperature at at least 80*.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

EDIT: Lowering the temperature will not aid swim bladder infections... swim bladder disease is a bacterial infection, and lowering the temperature would do nothing but slow the growth of the bacteria a TINY bit. Also, lowering the temperature would slow down the impossible pregnancy (1. Gouramis are egg layers, so they cannot get pregnant 2. males don't bear eggs).

Can't be pregnant, Gourami fertilize their eggs externally. If your fish is a female it may well be egg-bound. It's not likely that it is a female, because the Singapore breeders don't ship females of easy to breed species. If your plump Gourami is a male then he's exhibiting the symptoms of a disease called "bloat". It's bacterial and can be caused by a combination of poor water conditions and wrong diet. Good luck.
