Depends on what you like. The two most common today are 800x600 and 1024x768. With a 19", you will probably find the 1024 works the best. But it is a matter of personal taste (and how good your eyesight is).
*** Edit: ***
I just saw your other posting about it being a wide screen. The second numbers for a wide screen are different (because the ratio is different). With a wide screen, you may want to go one size "larger" such as 1200 or even 1440 because the screen is wider.
And you are right...it can feel like sitting in a drive-in a first. But eventually you will get use to it.

Short answer: 1280x1024 if it isn't widescreen, 1440x900 if it is. (Addendum: 32-bit color)
Long answer: All LCD screens can actually display only a single given resolution referred to as the native resolution. This is the physically number of horizontal and vertical pixels that make up the LCD matrix of the display. Setting a computer display to a resolution lower than this resolution will either cause the monitor to use a reduced visible area of the screen or it will have to do extrapolation. This extrapolation attempts to blend multiple pixels together to produce a similar image to what you would see if the monitor were to display it at the given resolution but it can result in fuzzy images.
Here are some of the common native resolutions found in LCD monitors:
* 14-15”: 1024x768 (XGA)
* 17-19”: 1280x1024 (SXGA)
* 20”+: 1600x1200 (UXGA)
* 19” (Widescreen): 1440x900 (WXGA+)
* 20” (Widescreen): 1680x1050 (WSXGA+)
* 24” (Widescreen): 1920x1200 (WUXGA)
* 30” (Widescreen): 2560x1600

All LCD monitors have a "native" resolution, which is the resolution that matches the number of pixels that exist on the monitor. Other resolutions will work, but none of them will be as clear and sharp as the native one. If it's a standard format monitor, the native res is probably either 1280x1024 or 1600x1200. If it's a wide screen format, then 1200x800, 1440x900 or 1680x1050 are possibilities, depending on the quality of the monitor. Your best bet is to look in Display Properties and see what the maximum available setting is. In most cases, that will be the native setting.

Return it for credit or a replacement. It shouldn't be grainy, etc. from the get go. If your previous monitor had a good "picture" then this one should also. It doesn't really matter if it's a CRT (picture tube) or a LCD (flatpanel) it should just plug in and be fine and then just a matter of adjusting the resolution to the size you like the best. I'd definitely return it.

Best thing to do is go from small to large, look at the screen, run a couple of programs, visit a couple of websites, change the resolution, repeat above, and you will know in a few min what resolution you want and like..

32 bit and as high as possible without the icons being too small and the computer running slow.
