I have ancestors on my mother's side who were pioneers in settling the state of Texas before it was made a state. They were on the frontier and built a fort for protection from the indians. They were members of the Texas Rangers and they fought in the cavalry during the Civil War. There was a book published about their lives near what is now Stephenville, Texas. My mother was born at home near Dublin and Victor, Texas. My great great grandmother was full blood Cherokee indian who was born in 1822 possible in Tennessee or Alabama and moved to Texas with her family. She is buried there and her name was Synthia Jane Campbell. Her father was probably a trader who traded with the indians. One of her sons who fought in the Civil War was still alive when my grandparents were living in Dublin where they had a reunion of Civil War soldiers which he attended. His name was Gabriel Keith.

We also had some outlaws on our family tree as well. We are distantly related to Jesse James, the outlaw and also to Willie Nelson, the country singer and composer. There was another minor criminal which I can't remember the name of, but he was persued by the Pinkerton Agency for some train robberies. We are also related to the Borden who invented evaporated milk.

If we look I suspect that everyone's antecedents played a role that contributed in some way. Some may have made what is considered major roles in major significant events. Others did things which changed the lives of people near and close.

One of my Great Grandfathers was considered a jack-of-all-trades. One of those trades was that of a wood carver. Among other things with that skill he carved designs in the wooden ceilings of homes built in the Tidewater of Virginia. He would do scenes of things like baby angels and the family story is that he used my Grandfather (when he was a baby) as a model for those baby angels.

Another, family member (in a different part of the country) ran a still to make a little money. The family story is that one day as she was working the still a federal agent showed up. He never left as she took care of him.

Another past member of the family opened the first general store in his town and when the first train track was laid became the train station and post office.

Other members of the family were part of the wagon trains going to the gold fields of California.

All families have these stories and all contributed to the history of our country.

well i can proudly say they did, my ancestors are the famous mexica people from mexico or as u would call them the aztecs. well when the spaniards invaded this continent my people were beautifull and strong, they invented the 365 day calender. the gregorian calendar is based on my peoples calendar, it is the most accurate there is with out having to add or take of any days or ours. they had all the cycles of the earth and stars down to the last detail. becus remember back in those beautifull days there was no pollution so my people would observe the skies with their bare eyes and could tell what was wat and they documented everything. but when that bastard christopher columbus came he saw that my people were very smart, wise, peacefull, inteligent people. so they couldnt let everyone know about it and burned all of our books killed all of our elders, so they would not say anything and could not teach. and that way they labeled us as barbaric people that did sacrifices and demonic rituals just becus it did not coenside with there beliefs. it was a great holocaust, they killed, raped, robed, and destroyed all of our history. that is something they dont want to tell u in school. well if u want to know more e-mail me and ill get into more detail on the calendar and its meanings and sycles. but it was the calendar system that has a major role in life today.

Yes.

I had family that fought in Scotland with the Bruce. I also had relatives in the Revolutionary War and they came over on the Mayflower, 3rd voyage originally. They also fought in the Civil War and WWI.

My dad traced our lineage back to the MacQueen's of Scotland & Royalty long removed.

That is all I know, oh the Revolutionary ones there were two, one was a spy for the US and the other a soldier in the Continnental Army. Col Nathaniel Smith.

Well, I don't know if it's true, since it was 900 years before my time but...

...family legend says that one of our ancestors was supposed to deliver a message that could have prevented the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The message never got through and the battle went on. Personally, I think the ancestor in question found a party on the way. ;)

My family is Mormon and they had a great deal to do with the destruction of the Native American culture here in the states. I do believe in their focus on family but they are convinced that Native Americans are the spawn of Cain and are a doomed culture. This is their justification for decimating a people. I think they have carried forth the ideals of the Anglo-European family structure/unit, but I do think that their focus is so narrow that it has been at the cost of other perspectives.

I have a Great-Great-Grand-Father (William Hoffman) that was a Union Army lieutenant in the War of Aggression (Civil War for you Yankees). He was in the Pennsylvania Volunteers. I have only seen one picture of him in uniform and that is with my late Grand-Father as a baby from around 1899 or 1900.
