it could depend on what the gauge is reading. If the gauge is pegged all the way past the highest point on the gauge, then either the gauge is defective(less likely) or the oil pressure sending unit is faulty(more likely). It could also be that the wiring for the sending unit is shorted to ground causing the oil pressure gauge to read full pressure. the best thing to do is buy a mechanical oil pressure gauge, or borrow one, and check the oil pressure where the oil pressure sending unit is installed. It is possible for the oil pressure relief valve to be stuck in the bore causing excessive oil pressure. In this case, you would have to remove the oil filter adapter housing and replace it. this is where the oil pressure releif valve and spring is. It could be that the spring broke and is causing the valve to get stuck in the bore.

If I were a betting man, I would bet the gage is on the fritz. Just get a cheap aftermarket and hook it to the output side of the filter boss. Compare the two. If it really is high pressure you should tend to it. Either the pressure relief is shot, the bypass is plugged or worst case a port is plugged. Too high of pressure can actually damage Main and Rod bearings. At least my brother the mechanic says so and he races his cars.

How high is high? The best way to tell is to remove the oil pressure sending unit and test it with a mechanical gage to see what your pressure truly is.

Check your oil level. too much oil will cause the pressure to go up and can cause damage to your seals.

pressure valve in the oil pump the 3.4L in these cars have alot of problems run away fast we try to not work on them in our shop if we can help it and they are not easy to work on, not much room to work on them in these cars, the LT1 ones are not fun to work on either but have less mechanical issues than the 3.4 ones
