When you purchase minutes for the phone, all you really are doing is setting up an account with x dollars in it based on x cents per minute. Your text messages are billed at x cents per message. (My rate is 10 cents a message I belive). If you have $10 worth of credit, you can send 100 message before you run out.

I don't have T-Mobile, but I do use another prepaid cell phone, and I text all the time. It works very well, uses fewer units and is more likely to reach the other person.

It should be on your phone as a menu option. If you have minutes you should be able to text. Do you have a 1-800 number that came with your phone? They should be able to answer your questions, but text messaging should be ready to go.

On my phone I click the menu button, scroll down to messages, select it, and scroll to text messages. It works very well.
