As far as maintaining the ecosystem in each one:
1. the relationships among the living things keep in balance by natural cycles of predators and prey, as well as other limiting factors like competition
2. the physical environment must be relatively stable in order to keep the same populations living there

Freshwater, marine, desert, forest, grassland, tundra, all can be better maintained by "tighter regulation."
