Sadly they are not so different.

In theory the republicans believe in less government, lower spending, and more personal freedom and states rights, but they haven't been practicing it much lately.

Democrats have a tendency to be idealists. They generally work toward making the world the way it should be. A Democrat will generally favor entitlement programs that provide government funds and services to those that are less fortunate, believing that with just the right amount of help, they will get off welfare and start earning their keep.

Republicans generally are realists. They work with the world as it is, not against it. They tend to recognize that government programs that provide entitlements to those less fortunate tend to make the "less fortunate" reliant on the government for the sustenance.

Apply the same thinking across the board.
Dems tend to believe that diplomacy is the key to world peace. Republicans recognize that diplomacy only works when the other party is interested in having an open discourse.

Democrats believe that saving the environment is a laudable goal, and they are prepared to spend government money to make that a reality. Republican believe that saving the environment is a laudable goal, but they recognize that it takes money to do it. Only a rich country can afford to worry about the environment, and they do what the can to keep the US as rich as possible.

Democrats believe the government should do everything they can to ensure the workers of the US retain their jobs. They will implement government oversight of companies to make that a reality. Republicans recognize that it is not the government's responsibility to keep you employed, it is your responsibility.

Hope that helps.
