Probably not, because it is by far the oldest structure in Egypt (water weathering proves it existed when Egypt was wetter, and the pyramids dont have this). It was also reported to hold a library of wisdom. Nah, it would be like laughing at Buddha or the Crucifix.

Would you believe the Sphinx in one form was a WOMAN? - not a man?

The word "sphinx" comes from the Greek Σφιγξ — Sphigx, apparently from the verb σφιγγω — sphiggo, meaning "to strangle" (note that the ng and nx sounds were written in ancient Greek as a double gammas. This may be her proper name, but The Penguin Dictionary of Classical Mythology states that her given name was Φιξ — Phix.) In Greek lore, a Sphinx once blocked the way to Thebes. She would give a riddle: "What walks on four legs in the morning, on two legs at noon, and on three legs in the evening?" Oedipus solved the riddle: man — he crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and walks with a cane in old age. Bested at last, the Sphinx then threw herself from her high rock and died. An alternative version tells that she devoured herself. The exact riddle asked by the Sphinx was not specified by early tellers of the story and was not standardized as the one given above until much later in Greek history. Thus Oedipus can be recognized as a liminal or "threshold" figure, helping effect the transition between the old religious practices, represented by the Sphinx, and new, Olympian ones.

I doubt if they made fun of it - more likely they feared it!

Hey! Wally - nice change from horses and hippos! The Sphinx are supposed to be a cross between a god and a lion! and were placed at the entrances of the pyramids (tombs) to ward of evil spirits. A least this is what the guide told us when we visited Luxor (Egypt) back in the early 1980's. CJ

I can hear some wiseguy passing by, nodding at the sphinx and suggesting that it must have been posed for by his mother-in-law.
