If your horse is confined in the stall all of the time, you will need to pick out the manure and urine soiled bedding a minimum of once a day, and replace what you removed with clean bedding, that won't take much, but totally muck it and re place all of the bedding a minimum of once a week. Which means, you are probably going to be using 3 to 4 bales of shavings a week, at least. I don't know if you are going to use straw or shavings, but if you can purchase shavings in bulk, it will save you quite a bit. I would suggest that you halter your horse and tie it outside the stall while you are cleaning out the stall...then you can groom and spend some quality time with your horse before you put him back into the stall. The more time that the horse spends outside of the stall, the less likely he will acquire stall vices such as cribbing, weaving, stall walking, eating wood, etc. You will catch on pretty quick how much bedding that you are going to have to purchase, and every horse is different, some are ladies, some are simply just pigs in a stall. Congrats on your horse!

Where I board the stalls are cleaned in the morning after the horses go out. If the horses are in the stalls are picked two or three times a day.

They get pulled back three or four times a week to air dry the mats and refreshed as needed with new shavings. My horse's stall probably gets 5 or 6 bags of shavings a week. He is on pasture 10-12 hours a day.

My horse is outside all day from 7 am to 9 pm and in during the night in 10x12 stall on rubber mats.
He is pretty messy so I clean every morning taking all the manure and wet stuff out and leve the rest alone until night time.
When he comes in for the night I put the old dry shavings in the middle for him to dirty up during the night and put fresh shavings around that and a little over the middle.
I don't use a lot of shavings. One bag last me a week.
When I had him on straw it did it the same way and a regular sized square bale lasted a week.

This is how we do it at my barn.

Every day we pick out the stalls, not take all the shavings out. We just pick up the manure, urine, and stale hay that they have sitting in there from the previous day. Every four days we do a more thorough job, adding some new shavings to the stall.

The only time we strip the stall completely and put brand new shavings down is when the horses have been stuck inside due to storm and there stalls have gotten messier than they usually would

We always picked up manure twice a day-- it really helps keep the flies down.
Every morning, we would move all dry shavings to the edges of the stalls and muck out the wet spots, then turned out the horses fo the day. This allowed the wet spots to dry a bit. Prior to letting the horses back in, the shavings around the edges got put in the center of the stall, them we'd add a bit of clean shavings around the edges. This worked great, and we used only two bags of shavings per horse per week.
Barns with mats use fewer shavings ( a bag a week per stall ), but they hadn't been widely available when we had our horses.

I clean my stalls everyday. On Friday(because it's payday:) I will add 4 to 5 new bags of bedding depending on how much was cleaned out during the week. Sometimes it may be more. If you don't keep enough bedding in the stall than it will get dirty faster and you will waste more bedding. I use cedar or pine shavings. Horses tend to munch on the straw.

During the winter when the horses are kept stalled, they also have paddock access. The stalls all have 1" rubber mats, but we like to keep a good bit of shavings down.
I pick 2 - 3 times a day, replenishing shavings as needed & our boys clean down once a week.

if you horse is stalled all day long its only fair to the horse you clean it everyday.

edit : if you meant totally strip the stall and remove all the shaving/straw a week is reasonable. But still the stall must be cleaned everyday.

I clean the stall everyday. If the horse is a lay-up and its in the stall 24/7 than I clean it twice a day.

Mucking doesn't need to be done EVERY day. Unless your horse is a slob. I board my horse at Horse Heaven Rescue and I go out there and clean it every three days. You won't be a bad owner if you do it every three days. Just remember not to skip a few days in between. Believe me. It can get messy. If you live with your horse, the same rules apply. I don't put bedding every week. I put it down every 2 weeks, because my horse isn't spoiled. People may say thats wrong if you do it that way, but everyone has their different opions. Hope you don't give in to the people that clean their horses stalls everyday. Yea it be nice if we all could. But we can't. Hope this helps.
Merry Christmas and have a happy new year
