Like we do for some of our cities? Like the mile high city? I wonder what they used to call Macchu Picchu? The 3 mile high city. The 2 and a half mile high city?

Maybe that's how the ancient city of Ur got it's name. "What's this town called?" "Errr..." "Ur! What a town!"

I would imagine that they did the same thing that we do. Coming from an agrarian community, when we needed something we went to 'town' (names didn't matter, we knew where town was) and if we wanted a special time we went to the 'city'.

Town being the closest place with stores and entertainment.
City being the closest big town, one with a mall or two and at least one fancy restaurant.

Well, if the Romans would give Gaius Ceasar a nickname llike Caligua, for the pants he wore, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't nickname their cities!

I havn't wondered about this but I am thankful that the town I live in now had a name change many years ago. It was called "Slaughter". Can you imagine telling people that you just rode in to Slaughter?

I'm sure they did. Okay, I have no proof, but it seems like we have always given things .. and people ... nicknames.
