Apparently the "bad guys" represent the Catholic Church. I didn't see it in the movie when I watched it, though.

Also, I'm Christian, and I didn't get offended at all. It's actually a pretty good movie.

It's not so much the movie as the books.
Truely the books are amazing and well written but that doesn't mean I agree with Pullman's views.

His Dark Materials (Golden Compass, Subtile Knife, and Amber Spyglass) are actually more of an indirect attack on the Catholic Church but a direct attack on the Narnia Chronicles (which Pullman hates).

Pullman is an outspoken atheist (which is enough to ruffle a few christian feathers). What leads to controversy is the fact that there are no good characters connected to religion. The Magestarium (an actual term used to discribe the Pope and the Vatacan council of bishops) is represented as an institution who purpose is to literally institutionalize the soul out of a person. Also in Lyra's world the reformation never happened. Another problem comes with some of the representation in the Amber Spyglass (but I won't spoil the fun if you want to read them).

I think I should note a few things:
1. When I read the Golden Compass (when I was 13) I read it as being anti-organized religion not anti-catholic
2. I am Catholic
3. Any arguments against the book about characters called daemons are stupid. Daemon (dispite the closeness to demon) is in the books, an outward expression of the soul. To argue against the books on this grounds is stupid and only plays into Pullman's opinion about religion.

its apparently a book series and in the last book someone kills God. It was written by an atheist (obviously) and is like a copy of Chronicles of Narnia but in an anti-Christian way
