Particularly for the new actors that get hired on. What to expect?

It depends on if they are extras, under 5's, recurring, on contract... lots of different categories to consider. Also, if they're new to one show, but were a big name on another they'd likely be able to negotiate more pay. If you mean a new contract player, they'll likely get anywhere from scale to twice that and be contracted for 3 days per week whether or not they work that many days. So they will be paid for at least 3 days per week regardless, more if they work over 3 days, and they still get overtime pay after 8 hours.

There's a very wide range of pay for TV soap actors. Some work for scale ($682/day), some get thousands of dollars a day.

The minimum salary a principal performer on soap can make is $682 per day. As I recall, that is the Day Player salary. Don't quote me on that. I haven't worked on the soaps in ages.

I believe it has a lot to do with experience and for the most part, they (actors-actresses) get paid by episodes.
