If you have witnesses and you gave no provocation, and it was hard enough, and you know the person, (also helps if you know their address, in case a restraining order may help) you may get a response to your complaint. Unless the police see the incident you will have to file a report a UCR uniform Crime Report.
They will investigate. You are subject to the whims of the officer and the DA to decide how the will enforce the law. Mostly if it did not leave a mark and you are not a woman you are out of luck.

Go to the police if you have a witness or slapmark and file a formal complaint to put on their public record the rest of their lives or press charges and have them arrested or fined for assault. You can whup the tar outta them and claim self defense too. But only if they block you and won't let you get away then thats another charge of false imprisonment increasing their sentence but if you can get away just walk away. They may come after you again with their friends.

Depends if you feel like you're in danger or not. If it is a slap out of anger and there is no further threat if you don't respond, then do not strike back. If you're in danger, then don't bother with the slap and do what it takes to defend yourself.

Punch their lights out, and keep at it. Do not stop until they are down. You let someone slap or hit me, and I am going to be beating them down! Bet they will not do it again. It warrants a good a$$ beating for sure....not just one lick.

Provocation can be used as a good defence for punching their lights out

,The Bible tells us if someone slaps your face, turn the other cheek, if they slap it again, the Bible does not tell us what to do, so I guess God leaves that one up to us, Let just make him proud of us and walk away like a lady or gentlemen, Bless you.

Depends on the situation. Although I cannot think of any situation where I would take a chance on going to jail for assault.
