When I was younger we lived in a creepy neighborhood. On night I thought someone broke into our house and was in my brothers room. I freaked, got my parents, and I was hysterical for days afterwards. Turns out there never was anyone, but I slept in the lving room for the remaining 6 months we were there. We have now moved into a much nicer neighborhood, but I still have a fear of someone breaking in. I have to sleep with my TV on all night. Whenever I try to sleep without it I start hearing noises, I become very frightened, and I come close to crying. I am almost 15 and I know how ridiculous I am acting, but I am terrified.

What can I do to get over this? I have never even told any of my friends about this.

Believe it or not you suffered a trauma. Real or imagined. You sincerely believed at the time that someone broke into your home and was in your brothers room. This was very frightening to you. It doesn't matter that no one actually broke in. You believed that someone had. You felt at the time that you and your family was in danger and that you had no control over the situation. When no one was found instead of feeling relieved you then thought that the person only got away or was in fact hiding. Because you didn't have a conclusion to the matter you still are feeling frightened by it. Everyone fears a break in. It is a frightening thing to occur. You feel that you have been demoralized, victimized, used, you are hurt, angry and scared. These are all normal reactions. You can not let these fears overtake your life though. I also have to go to sleep with the tv on. Not because I am afraid or anything but if I don't I to hear all the creaks and moans of the house. What I do is I set the sleeper on the tv to go off after 3 hrs. This way I am already deep asleep when it turns off. Try doing that. After a while you will realize that you are sleeping through the night without the tv as a crutch.
Now you said that you have never told your friends. Have you talked to your parents about it? Let them know how you feel. They will be able to help you get through the terror. Perhaps as a family you can implement safety features in the home that will help to make you feel more secure. Speak to your parents don't be embarassed they will not judge you. Good luck

yea i know how you feel i sleep with lights on..... cant sleep without that but for other reasons

anyways how to overcome this

baby steps
first try to lower the volume of the tv
then get a teady bear and put him next to you with someones perfume on it like if u have a bf or even ur mother's or father's

anyways then try not to sleep in the living room sleep in your bedroom with lights on then step by step you know get those night lights or something. AND while that dont think about the breaking thing fantasize imagine you are someone else somewhere else until you fall asleep

Go get some professional help! Go to the Mental Health Agency if you do not have health insurance!! That was such a dominant fear that you need help in overcoming it! Talking it over with professionally trained people HELPS!! If nothing else helps, get a doctor to Rx a medication that can help you!!! There is hardly any way, otherwise, for you to use your intellect and abilty to get on with your life!!

I know how you feel hun. Talk to your friends and family about it. I have spells of terrible nighmares, but when I open up and talk about them, they go away for a while. It might also help to write your feelings and fears down on paper. Good luck!!
