As I was touching my 8 month's old forehead today I noticed it is so much softer than mine. I mean it almost felt like i could sink my finger in it... is this normal?

It almost feels as if her forehead is "pudgy". Yes, she is a chubby baby but can she have fat on her forehead? LOL, i know this sounds funny but I'm wondering...

my understanding is that the fontanelle is right at the top of the head, when i say forehead i mean the area above the eyebrows... is that still the fontanelle?

greydoc: how black would her eyes get? very noticeably black? if it is the case, do i have to go see a pediatrician right away?
how big would the impact have to be to cause such a condition? Could it also be from her hitting her head against the sides of the crib (she can be quite an active sleeper and the bumper pads don't always help)?
Thanks! (for scaring me that is ;) )

No, it is not exactly normal. Rarely the anterior fontanelle can extend anteriorly, almost separating the frontal bones. This would have been present at birth and you or the pediatrician would have noted it earlier. There are also rare defects in the metopic suture, the area where the two frontal (forehead) bones meet in the midline. Again, this is present at birth.

I think your baby fell on her forehead, and you are feeling a subgaleal hematoma or seroma. While most of these resolve without incident, you should still consult your infant's doctor. There are occasional complications such as underlying skull fractures.

If my suspicion is correct, you might notice two black eyes in a week or so.

Yes, their bones aren't hard yet... not to mention the fact that a baby's skull is made of several bones that eventually form together.

Dood!
Don't just poke his forehead!
Babies are always soft.
Their bones are still flexable.
