The dems want us to use compact fluorescent bulbs.

Do Dems realize how poisonous those bulbs are to the environment?

And, if you break a bulb at home, you better be know how to clean it up without letting the mercury poison either you or the kids.

You also have to make a special trip to the hazardous waste dump to get rid of your broken CFL bulb!!!!

How much will that destroy the environment?

"Grandma will poison herself because she won't follow the complex rules to clean up the broken bulb... double plastic bag, change the vacuum cleaner bag, take it to the hazardous waste site, etc. " Is that statement fairly accurate?

Mercury from coal is different than mercury in your house, on the carpet where the kids play and you walk everyday. Right?

Since the US gets 50% of it's power from coal and the reduction of coal burned by replacing one bulb will result in 10 times lower mercury emmisions then if the entire mercury contents of a CFL bulb were released to the enviroment I am going to have to say a very large negitive number.

"Do you know that scientists say that CFL bulbs are only make sense if you leave the bulb on for at least 4 hours each day?" - No scientist has said this. Some CFLs will have a shorter life if reapiodly power cycled, however they still save enegery over an incondesent bulb.

"Mercury from coal is different than mercury in your house, on the carpet where the kids play and you walk everyday. Right?" - NO. Mercury is mercury. If it is in coal smoke it will settle on EVERYTHING. Play ground equipment. Gets tracked in to the house.

I have had CFLs in my house for a long time. I have dropped a few. Never had one break, the glass is pretty thick.

Besides, if you don't like CFLs, buy LED lights instead. or haligen. Or make a more efficent incondesent lamp. The law does not ban any type of lamp. It bans lamps that produce less than a certain number of lums per watt (I forget the numbers at the moment).

Dude, where is my party? I really am a Dem, really. And I thought it was some kind of joke. Why is it every time my party signs or submits legislation I end up with fewer life choices and ultimately I pay more for less. For what it's worth, about 70% or better of our lights are CFL but where I read and need to see proper color incandesent all the way. P.S. To my party: Please stop trying to save us from ourselves. The left of our party doomed us 8 year ago. Please go on a long vacation. look at the religious right then look in the mirror. See the resemblance? Didn't think so.

Please get your facts straight..

First, the DEMS? This bill was co-sponsored by a Republican senator and it also has broad bi-partisan support in both houses. Secondly, it does not mandate compact flourescent bulbs as the only alternative, it also includes halogen and mini-diode as well as higher efficiency incandescent. Finally, it is estimated switching to more efficient light bulbs will save over 6 billion annually in energy costs, that includes the costs of producing electricity in coal and other fossil fuels.

Plastic shopping bags also kill dolphins. Where's the outrage?

Of course you know that there is no mercury in those energy saving flurescent bulbs. You just forgot there for a second, didn't you. I wouldn't want to think that you didn't know what you are talking about. No linke or anything, you know how it is. Do you know how a flurescent bulb works? Obviously you don't. They are not mercury vapor lamps like street lights in some cities, our city has banned them, but simple flurescent bulbs like have been used in offices and factories for decades. Do some research you look silly posting something like this.

Do you know how much mercury is discharged in a ton of coal when it is burned? Or arsenic from the same ton? Or sulfur dioxide that causes acid rain? The amount of coal or nuclear power that is saved by one bulb, in my opinion, is worth it.

47 kids and 13 fish. I think the rising tides from global warming will wash away the mercury, though. Here's an actual fact. Everyone who breaks a lightbulb is going to die, even if they clean it up!

This question is a perfect example of desperate Republican who knows they're losing so he grabbing at anything to gain an edge. Let me guess, I bet you thought the California wild fires were the Dems fault too. Hahahaha. Enjoy your life of mixing concrete.
