a stranger smiled at me in the supermarket.
It was a warm and genuine smile. It really touched me and yes brightened my day.

I think so. If you see someone smile and you smile and the next person smile it is contagious especially when someone is having a bad day and someone smiles at them it can change someones out look on the day

sure can!!!
whenever i go to my local gas stations, lumber yard, hardware stores, resturants, just about aywhere i go , the people that know me always got a smile for me, and i always got one for them!!!
kinda makes the day go better!!!
the only place that is reluctant on givin up the smile is the DMV, but hey, i'm workin on it!!!

Only if it's sincere and not patronizing, mocking or worst of all, sympathetic. I know people who smile sympatheticely are just trying to be, ah...ah, sympathetic, but all it really does is make you think, "Wow, does my life suck that bad that I carry an aura of life-suckiness?"
