Maybe portraits are'nt for you. I could never do portraits, but my landscapes won state title and are still on display at my highschool 24 years later.

Realism drawing takes a long time to train yourself to do, you've got a good start.

Practice doing just parts for a while, like noses or just fingers or hands or eyes or hair. The more your mind trains your hand to do what your eye sees or what your mind visualizes, the easier it gets. That second picture was done by someone with a LOT of experience.

Natural talent can be trained, and you've got natural talent. You just need the practice. Try some tutorials online (google searches will find those for you). If there's any life drawing classes in your city, check them out--our local college has them on the second Thursday of the month, for $5, the classes run 4 hours long and you draw real people posing for you while the art teacher walks around for consultation.

And look at the styles used by other artists. Check how they do the profiles, hair, bridge of the nose, nostrils, clothing creases, etc. You can see what works in the medium they use.

Drawing a super rendered face like that takes a LONG time and practice. The best way is to just keep drawing. Don't concentrate on drawing the outline of the face but first grasp the basic shapes of the face and understanding the anatomy of the face, cuz the face isn't flat, it has dips, curves, and over laps.

I recommend taking some drawing classes to get you familiarized with basics of drawing and techniques when drawing any part of the human body.

Here's some really helpful books to use on drawing the face: Atlas of Human Anatomy for Artists, The Human Figure: Anatomy for Artists, Drawing the Human Head

Happy drawing! ^_^

You have to practice smooth transitions from light to dark and back again. Don't worry about rendering faces yet. Just section off your paper into strips, where you go from white to black, in shades of gray.

You will find tissues or paper stumps helpful for blending.

Then work up to drawing simple objects tonally, like an egg or a mug. After that you can try faces.

If you get the lights and darks in the right places, you'll have a realistic drawing.

Learn to draw and see the shades, not the lines. Use your lines as guides for the proportion and markers for features. You need to practice more if you want to be a good portrait artist.

dude its all about shading and lighting using simple materials , trust me you can do better then diCaprio pic, what you need for practice is dark papers and 2B , 4B pencils and white chalk .. first draw the the face in2B the add carefully the shading using the 4B (dont use your finger for blending!) then add the lighting using the chalk .. try that and tell !
