I am starting community college later than my classmates, and I want to catch up with them for fall semester of our junior year (at a university). I want to take as much classes as possible and to maximize my time. However, I can't take summer classes because I have to leave the country during summer to visit family. Is it possible for me to take those summer classes online? and will they be credited?

Most community colleges have some, but not all, classes available online. You will have to look in the course catalog of summer classes to see if the classes you need will be online. Also, online classes require you to go online a few times per week, as well as doing some work like research papers. Generally the online classes are not self-paced, and every week there will be new projects and quizzes with deadlines at the end of the week.

You will have to make sure that even when you are out of the country, you have time to access the website, to read the textbook, and to do any homework. You should also make sure that there are no group projects in the class, because obviously you won't be able to meet up with classmates. If your family has a good internet connection (not heavily censored like in China) and you will have plenty of time to do your classwork, then go for it. If you think you will be pretty busy all the time with family activities, or that it will be difficult to find an internet connection, you may as well not take the online class.

Oh, and online classes from a community college offer the same amount of credit as regular courses.

Yes. You can totally do that they are called hybrid courses. I did that for my summer semester once as well. It turned out pretty good. The only thing is that they normally require you to come to campus once for like an class orientation so you can know whats expected of you for that class. Your grade will be credited just as if you were on campus so do the work don't slack because unlike being in class if you get behind you are on your own to catch up. Good luck!!! I hope I helped. Have fun on your trip.

Not harder, just different. You have to be an independent learner and not need the interaction of face to face discussion. check this link - it is the site of a very well recognized university in Canada that has been doing distance education for more than 30 years. You should find good information there. Do be careful of online courses. Not all of them are worth the money.
