The term "double cast" has two meanings, in your case, it means that the director has put two actors in many or all of the roles, some will do some performances and the others the other performances. It gives more opportunity for participation, especially if it is a smaller cast show. The other meaning of the word is that one actor may play two or more roles in the same play.

It is according to reference of the play or the role. A play that has a double cast is a play with two different performers playing the same part in two different performances; as in double-casting the role in a play. A person that has been cast in a dual (or double) role is to portray two different characters in a single play. In this instance of the question, it is unclear what is being asked.

Double cast means that there is more than one actor to play a certain part.
For example in the sound of music they might double cast the children. like the first cast brown second cast blonde. The director would choose which nights the brown group would play and when the blonde group would play.
this is also useful if not all the members are going to be available or if someone gets sick. You would just trade out.
For just one character usually one is double cast because of scheduling conflicts.
but strait definition
Double cast means that there are two different people to play a given role.

All of the above answers are correct, to a certain extent. I think you are referring to an "A" cast and a "B" cast (or a "red" and a "blue", you get my drift) for the same show. Same roles, different actors.
In musicals, especially, it is not uncommon for secondary (or even tertiary) leads to understudy leads. Lazar Wolf for Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Charlie Cowell for Harold Hill in Music Man and Ado Annie for Laurie in Oklahoma! are just the first that spring to mind.
If you have been Double Cast in a show, it means another actor is also learning your role. Have some fun. Get together with that actor and compare notes. Learn from each other.

Theatre terminology is very very important. Please make sure you are getting your answers from reliable sources.
Double cast = one actor playing several smaller roles in one show. Ie. Chorus members are often double cast in smaller speaking roles so the show only has 30 performers instead of 50.
Understudy = two actors assigned to the same role in the event that the lead actor falls ill or is injured, there is substitue performer so that the "show can go on"
Double casting is found in pretty much every theatre company, understudies (other terms are swings, doubles, sub-in) are usually only employed in larger theatre companies or shows with extended runs.

It means that there are two actors playing each role. The actors will alternate performances night by night and while on plays the role assigned the other is in the chorus. Also double casted musical are easier to be casted in because they need more people
