There are many schools with good theatre or acting programs. New York has some good ones, all listed above already but so do many other states and colleges. The NY schools are notoriously hard to get into and expensive as well. If it's movies you want, the education will prepare you to be a good actor but not for the real world of acting. Yale, Harvard, even much smaller and less 'brand name' schools have great programs. Movies = Los Angeles. Look at UCLA which is also very hard to get into. You can also go to any other college or Univ. in LA and go to an acting studio for classes. They're everywhere here and there are many many decent ones. Check out workingactor.com for info on living and working in LA as an actor.
As for what are the prerequisites to getting into a collegiate acting program, you'd have to visit the website for each program to find that out as they are all likely to be slightly different. You can find links starting here: http://www.collegeboard.com/splash/ Get an account or just look up any college you want and go to their website then find the page for the theatre department or acting department, whatever they call it at that school. You can likely email the admissions office and get more info on requirements and who you should speak to directly as well.
Good luck,
Marianne

for a major like acting/theater arts, many schools are an option. but the best programs within larger, universities include one of the most popular ones, NYU but you'll not only need talent to get in, but good grades and SAT scores. another good choice would be Northwestern, Michigan, William & Mary, Yale, Skidmore, Middlebury, i can't think of any more but these are the cream of the crop.
EDIT: for the person who recommended 'Bernard School for the Arts,' are you aware that this school doesn't exist? Lauren Graham went to Barnard College, the women's college of Columbia University. It is not an arts school. It is a liberal arts college.

Most college and university acting schools are keyed to the stage and most often classical theatre. They require top gpa's and an audition. They are very selective, very snooty, and very expensive. Acting schools and studios and academies are also very over priced and not worth the money,. A film actor can get better professional training by taking selected classes here and there, thus saving thousands and thousands of dollars. If you are very talented and have enough maturity, you are wasting valuable time by going to college or acting school.
