There are many trains in Europe, and in most of them you can travel if you have a pass, in the countries where the pass works. (Sometimes you need to pay a surcharge.)

But a pass is not always the best option. You need to do a lot of traveling to be cheaper off with a pass. If you have a pass that is valid all the time for the period it runs, you need to be in the train almost every other day for half a day, if you buy a pass that is valid for part of the days, like 7 out of 30 (or so) you need to do long travels on each of those 7 days.

You can easily get single tickets or 2 month tickets for one trip that allow you to stop of on many of the stations underway.

And to see if a pass is useful for you:

And here links for a rail planner site:

It is the site for Germany, but it is pretty good for travels all over Europe.

It is called the Eurail pass.
You buy a pass for certain countries or certain number of days. If you get it for say 7 days, it is ok to use it for 1 day, and then not use it for a few days, then you still have 6 days left. So the days are not consecutive. That is the main question I had about it when I bought it last summer.

that is the official website but there are many more if you search for europe train pass, or eurail pass. everyone once in awhile there are special discounts and you can save $50, $100 or more, so check multiple websites.
