If people thought through to the consequences of their cheating fewer would do it. The problem is they don't.
They were not thinking of their partner at all, that's why they cheat, they are thinking only of themselves - their wants, their "needs", their "having it all" without facing the consequences. They believe that they can do it, hide it, have it all and not be caught. They believe that they are being fair. they justify it to themselves, giving them permission to do it.
They know its wrong (that's why they hide it). But pretend to themselves that they are doing it for the noble reason of not hurting the spouse. But they are. Because if they didn't care at all they would leave, not cheat.

Of course it is to the advantage of anyone in a committed relationship.
But once those actions have happened it is up to the ones in the relationship to forgive and move forward and work through the reasons why ( if that is what they want) or to give up on the relationship so no more intentional hurt is caused.

No. Maybe people expect too much from their spouses. That is why it doesn't work. Life is not TV or a movie. People make mistakes.
