I have to write an essay about myself for an application. How do I explain in words how I have an "exemplary character", as they put it, without sounding cheesy or stuck-up?

Application for what, exactly?

Use words that promote your good character, but not your status. By that I mean, describe yourself as "reliable", "friendly", "outgoing", "a problem-solver", "a modern-minded person", "trustworthy", etc. It's okay to say things like "smart" and "proficient in ____" and "great with _____". Describe your good qualities as strengths, not as absolutes. Add that you want to learn something or improve in some way, and that will show humility AND interest.

I'll edit your essay if you like; it's what I do.

Is "examplary character" the only thing you have to write about in this essay? If it's not, why not focus on more quantifiable strengths and say modestly that you'll rely on your references to vouch for your character?

I addition to the other answers, which seem good, I add that you can give EXAMPLES of how you have demonstrated a quality in the past, rather than just saying that you have it. Then you don't have to say the actual phrase.
