I am a Doctor of Medicine and was in military service. I was
wounded, and came back to London to restore my health. My pension was so small, that I could not afford to rent anything on my own, so I went into halves with another man.
He is not difficult to live with, quiet in his ways, but he is strange. He does not study medicine, yet he spends a lot of time in dissecting rooms. He plays violin. He is constantly experimenting with chemicals, and inventing new tests.
Strange people visit them at any time of the day: young girls, ruddy- cheeked men, old women and old men.
I can't understand what is his work, or how he makes his living. It would have been easy just to ask, but he is somewhat intimidating, and I can't do it. What can his occupation be?

I understand he's written a very useful monograph on cigar ash. I would ask the boys in the street. They seem to run a lot of errands for him. Ask them what he's up to. Keep notes. This might turn into an interesting story or two!
