I cannot believe some of the answers to this question.
If I had no money for food, then I WOULD use money given to my child as a gift. What is more important, a piggy bank of full of money, or food in their hungry tummy's? I would, however, replace the money when the crisis was over, and have in fact done all the above, and my 3 kids have grown up to love me for doing the right thing at the time.

I have been poor, government cheese poor at one point, but I never took money or anything else from my children!

Sounds suspicious to me. If the children were starving I think the family would provide. Even if your ex doesn't, most grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., pitch in.

Find this hard to believe, but I am giving benefit of doubt here. IF,and that is a huge IF, your circumstances are that dire, I would think you would keep record, like I.O.U. and pay the children back. I find your situation highly questionable.

You nick the kids money for petrol but you can afford to run a car and obviously have a PC? SELL THE FCUKIN CAR AND THE PC AND GIVE THE KIDS THEIR MONEY BACK. And tell your ex that you need more financial support rather than thieving off your weans. You shouldn't have any need to use THEIR money for FOOD, etc ! If you aren't working you must get benefits of some description - including CHILD BENEFIT, so what are you using THAT for?

My family are grown up now but I would never have thought of doing that. However, I am in no position to be judgemental as I never had the need to take their money. If you took it for essentials there could be arguements you were correct. If you simply took it to pamper yourself or have a good night out then probably I would be judgemental and say that is just not on.

I've always given the money to my child. When I was struggling as a single parent, I did borrow it once or twice, but I asked to borrow it first and paid it back!

I get that you have financial difficulties, but the only way out of a situation like this is to get a job! Even a part-time one will help.

i am sorry that you have such a hard time, but what were you thinking posting a question like this? It was obvious you were going to get some abuse.
To answer your question, i would not spend my kids money, id sell my non essentials first such as car, pc.
You need to speak to someone about your finances to get some help

I would like to know the backstory between you and your children before I judge you you, but are you extremely poor? Even so, you should at least tell them "Mommy had to use the money for gas, I will make it up to you as soon as possible." You need to set good morals for your children or they will eventually cut you out of their life, like I have my father. Kids aren't dumb, they WILL find out--because from the sounds of it, you have done similar things before. I wish you the best! We can all change for the better, including me.

I give my Granddaughter money regularly every month and I know her Dad takes it sometimes and doesn't always give it back.
