Multiply $25.98 by .0825 and then add them. I got $2.143350 for the tax, which I suppose would be rounded up to $2.15; then I added $2.15 to $25.98 and got $28.13, so you'll get $1.87 in change.
An easier way, since all you need to know is whether the gift card will cover the total, is to take 10% of $25.98, which you can tell without working it out is $2.59 (rounded to $2.60), and you can see right away that the total will be under $30.00.
TIP; if a percent is 10 or more, just put a decimal point before that number and remove the % sign. If it's less than 10, put a zero after the decimal, then the rest of the number. So 8.25% =.0825. Got it?

Ok, so this is how we deal with the percents.
You know the price of both cd's combined is $25.92. However, the store charges you tax, which means it will add to the total price. We first need to find how much it will add. To do so, use this equation.
Tax = Percent * total price
Tax = 0.0825 * 25.98 (here i converted 8.25% into a decimal by moving the decimal place back two places).
Tax = 2.14335 (Since we're dealing with money, i'll round to the nearest hundreth)
Tax = 2.14
So the total price is going to be the price of the cds and the tax.
Total price = 25.98 + 2.14 = 28.12
So since your gift card is $30, you have enough money. YAY!!
Hope this helps.

A percent is usually a number over 100.
Examples
100% is 100/100 or 1
25% is 25/100 or .25
9% is 9/100 or .09
Thus to find out the tax here take 25.98 x .0825
30.00 - [25.95 + (25.98 x .0825)]
if the answer is positive than the certificate will cover.
if the answer is negative than the certificate will not cover.

take .0825 times 25.98 and then add that amount to 25.98 and subtract that from 30.00. 25.96 plus 2.14 equals 28.12 so the gift certificate will cover the cost

yes. the gift card will cover the cost.
$25.98 (actual price) X (8.25%(sales Tax))/100
= $2.15 (sales tax)
25.98 +2.15 = $28.13 (total price)
$30 (gift card) - $28.13= $1.87 left on your card

percents are easy...8.25% would equal .0825, just move the decimal over 2 spots to the left. then times it by the price, what the cd's should have cost is 28.12
