Many things. The biggest being the ocean. This allowed easy export. The appalachians also were a big factor as they produced a lot of coal for energy.
Those were the biggest geographical features. Factories needed to be close to the shipping and energy markets.

It's called the "fall line", where water falls from the mountains and hills to the coastal plain and into the ocean. This was an easy source of cheap energy (before coal) so many of the eastern seaboard towns were situated along rivers in order to both have this easy access to energy and then the convenience of shipping as well.

THEIR REALLY WAS NO GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURE IN THE NORTHEAST,YOU CAN SAY QUICKLY THE OCEAN, BUT DURING THEMID1800'S- TO EARL 1900'S, THERE WAS JUST 10TIMES AS MANY PEOPLE THERE AT THE TIME, IT WAS CONVENIENT TO BUILD FACTORIES WHERE THERE WAS THE MOST CONCENTRATED MASS OF PEOPLE, IMMIGRANTS FLOCKED TO THE NORTHEAST, THE FACTORY OWNER'S HAD AN IMMEDIATE CHEAP LABOR WORK FORCE!! ALSO, IN THE SOUTH ATLANTA, THE BIGGEST AND MOST POPULATED TOO, HAD LOTS OF FACTORY WORK. BUT, PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY THE NE BECAUSE THE SOUTH HAD FEWER IMMIGRANTS!! BUT, ATLANTA IS BY THE OCEAN TOO!! THE NE JUST HAD MORE PEOPLE, BASICALLY!!!!!
