I'm not a fan of the SOAPS but my mother and sister are; they are into the ABC soaps. I happen to watch a little bit when they are on the screen.

I was wondering if the style of soaps are meant to be over the top and not realistic. One might argue that every show out there is not meant to be realistic such as "24" and what not but i mean things like stealing someone's sperm from a sperm bank.

Is the style of soaps meant to be not real at all?

24 is NOT realistic in the least. And the last few seasons have gotten SO ridiculous I don't even know where to begin.

As far as Soap operas, they are meant to be escapist fantasy and NOT to be taken seriously.

Soaps should not be the way they are made now, they should have some melodrama, some action adventure spy mysteries plus a dash of Screwball comedy. There is a suspension of disbelief but that is generally found in most forms of film and television.

The problems with soaps today are non fresh writers swapping places on all soaps, a lack of budget, and a poorly misguided attempt to appeal to teen audiences with focus on new unproven actors, breaking the chain from the old, neglecting those actors that have garnered near blind devotion from those that watch only for those and what once was while putting off the kids with the material made for them.

When I was a kid my favorite soaps were Days and Another Word, I know GH fans would probably feel the same way, others too, there was solid action, adventure, some screwball comedy, serious drama and in general everything was handled properly. the older actors were appealing to the younger audiences and while there were teen stories, they did not dominate the show and these kids were more connected to the shows past with interactions. There are good kids today and there seems to be some changes in some places but I can not stand the younger set on Days, Allison Sweeney was the last great one but I did like the old Stephanie.

There is no budget now, they use to do shows on location, you would see stunts with helicopters, explosions, blood, it would look big and real in the 80s. Now it seems to be all on a plastic stage.

The 80's days had John de Lancie (Q of Star Trek TNG) as a mad inventor and eccentric that had a family curse of bearing the Bradford Seal. This seal had the Bradford family crest on one side the phoenix emblem of the Dimerra's on the other. It held great supernatural power and Stefano wanted it, this was the family feud on that show. The writers now have no commitment to continuity, the past is rewritten too much. A person born 10 years ago is married to a person born 22 years ago with a son that is about 15 or so and she was babysat by a guy that is now younger than her.

The writers think the audiences are idiots, they disrespect us and we hang on for the hopes of seeing what once was great.

Soaps should be great television but there is no vision behind them anymore.

It's not supposed to be realistic in that it could happen to anybody, but it's plausible in that each soap has its own intrinsic set of rules (like, say, the laws of physics in the real world) that the writing needs to work within in order to make sense. Lately, General Hospital (the only soap I watch) has been violating its own rules left and right, and therefore can only be described as a fustercluck (you know what I'm trying to say). It makes no sense, and it's been hemmoraging viewers for years as a result.

there are some true life events on soaps like addictions, miscarriages, abortions, health probs. so sometimes it is plausible and other times like u've mentioned with stealing sperm, and fixing elections, (while posible for some is more implausible for most) and ghost that can touch and talk to ppl that jus dont make sense.

i would like to believe that most of us fans of soaps dont take these things too seriously. they are strictly for entertainment purposes, an ave by which we can escape the bore, or excitement of our own everyday lives.

I sure hope they aren't supposed to be realistic. The things that happen on those show are so bizarre, that they better not be intendeed tp be real.

Anything can happen in the soap world. The dead come back to life, they have evil dopplegangers, and many more..

Yes, they are. The writer's, producer's etc.. could not possibly expect us to be that dumb, so they must do it on purpose just for mindless entertainment.

Evil twins, amnesia, demonic possession... they're pure escapism, not realistic at all.
