No, Socket A is NOT the same as Socket AM2. AM2 is a latter spec than Socket A.

Socket A died a couple of years ago. Motherboards are nearly impossible to get and processors are - though I've got a couple of spares I can't use>_<

The A socket was used with Duron and Athlon Xp processors, though a couple of Sempron processors were produced in socket A form.

Socket A was replaced by socket 939, then by AM2 which is undergoing a change to AM2+ (Socket AM3 may be out as early as the end of next year^^;)

Socket:
A - Athlon 32bit
754 - Athlon 64bit single core - lasted less than a year
939 - Athlon 64bit singlecore
940 - Opteron 64 processors (servers)
AM2 - Athlon64 single and dualcore
AM2+ - Athlon 64 including quadcore.

nicely, no, there are quite some alterations. at the start am2+ has Hypertransport 3.0 what AM2 socket appearantly would not have and the 2nd important distinction is that AM2+ has split capability planes: one for the CPU cores, and the different for the integrated reminiscence controller, which will advance capability mark downs, noticeably with integrated pictures, if the CPU cores are in sleep mode however the IMC continues to be energetic. the two considered one of those sockets have compatibility with AM3 CPUs, AM2+ socket helps AM2 CPUs and vice versa. And there are additionally some minor alterations between those sockets.
