i believe that Al does have an oxidation number of +3

2Al(s) + 2NaOH + 6H2O → 2Na+ + 2[Al(OH)4]- + 3H2(g)

Al2O3 + 2 NaOH + 3 H2O --> 2 Na+ + 2 [Al(OH)4]-

It is definitely +3
Also, the reaction of Al + NaOH will be VERY exothermic

I don't think our top contributor is right. He shows an oxidation state of Al as +4. I think it is +3. Anybody agree.
