It's an old saying that the females shouldnt go out of the house after just having a baby because their bodies are still "open" and can easily get an infection moreso than if they were at home. That's why.
I suppose that nowadays not too many people listen to this reasoning and go out when they feel up to it but im more inclined to listen to the old skool just a little. I'd give it a week or so before I made any big movements outside of the house. I have known females who have caught infection within the first couple days after birth. Now whether this is due to them being out and about so quickly, Im not sure but these particular women were out of the house within a day or so of having a baby.
And I know that my grandmother went to "town" just two days after having my uncle and gained the biggest infection ever that nearly killed her. I'm sure that these days it is perfectly safe but it never hurts to be cautious. Try to let your body heal just a tad before venturing out.

I was told to stay close to home for 2 weeks, but my baby was born in August. At the very least, make sure you have the opportunity to get out and take a long walk. Let your husband/partner watch the baby for an hour or so to keep you from climbing the walls.
By the time the baby is a month old, I would say it's safe to take him out. Make sure he's bundled, you have plenty of sanitizing lotion, and you keep curious strangers from getting too close. A great way to do this is to "wear" your baby in a sling or other carrier.
The first few weeks are rough, but I promise it will get easier. Good luck and congratulations!

Why did people tell you you had to stay in the house? I went for a walk less than a week after having the baby. I took the baby to the mall a few weeks after giving birth, just to get out of the house.

I had a C-section. I went out with my family to dinner with the baby when she was 3 days old. I wore a binder and that helped me feel better. I went for short walks in the beginning and slowly increased the amount of time that I was out walking. However, I was very active all during my pregnancy. I did not go back to the gym until 14 weeks post-partum.
For the first 3 weeks, I had other family members drive me around - the doctor told me no driving during that time period.

No you don't have to stay in the house. People will tell you baby should stay in due to it being cold/flu season. However if you do take baby with put him/her in a sling where it will be "hands off" for people. I went out the forth day with a friend of mine to target. It was a quick trip as I felt like crap but needed to get out and needed a break. It was just out to pick up breast pads and maxi's. Go out when you feel like. Just know that you aren't going to be feeling like doing a lot of walking. Even a quick trip to the gas station might do you some good. It is rough at times those first six weeks but after that life does get easier. Enjoy your little one!

Girl, let me tell you...do what you want to do. You know how you feel...and what you are up to doing. All this stuff is an old wives tale. My daughter is 22, I had her with a midwife, at home in my own bedroom. Had her, got up and took a shower, and my new baby and I went to the store....we are both well and doing just fine. My last baby is 14, on the way home from the hospital I had to stop at the grocery store, so we would have food..been going ever since...good luck to you!

I stayed in for a long time because I was pretty much bedridden. But if you feel fine, then you can go out. Just take it nice and slow. I went to get a breast pump once a week after giving birth and had to sit in a wheel chair at the store. But I had a complicated delivery.

Who's telling you to stay in? If you feel good enough go out! Depending on where you live, just bundle the baby up and make sure they are not too cold or too hot. Baby and I were out and about 2-3 days after I gave birth! We went in for the babys check up and went grocery shopping.

What? I was out of the house a few days later. As soon as you feel up to it, do it. I didn't go far-my husband and I went to the store while my Mom stayed with the baby-but I know how you feel. I started going for walks about 2 weeks PP. It was a strangely warm winter, so I took advantage of it. If you're up to it, go! Even just a ride to the corner store will do you some good. If you take the baby anywhere, make anyone who wants to touch him or her wash their hands since its cold season. Congratulations!
