I planted this little tree last May. It continued to do poorly...as soon as new leaves would open, almost immediately the leaf edges would turn yellow and curl inward. I gave it plenty of water so that wasn't the problem. A month ago I dug it up & put it into a large pot, good soil & brought it under a cover. My question is should I still water it when it's dry or just let it hybernate all winter? Was my location bad...to much sun? This tree is important to me as it was one of my late husband's favorites.

go back to where you got the tree and ask them what's going on with it..... maple trees need to be outside to experience the cold and go dormant, so I'm going to expect them to tell you to put the potted tree in a cold room....look at the tags that came with the tree, too... get a name for it.... is it one of these?.... look at "moonfire", nigrum, and nure sagi....

It sounds to me like the tree has had too much stress. Yes keep it watered. I don't think that you should have transplanted it. Trees don't hibernate they go dormant in cooler temps. When trees go dormant they STILL need water,
Your tree MAY have another issue but I think stress is a #1 factor.

Can't help you but to advise you to go to a knowledgeable nursery or horticulturist in your location.
