NO epidurals can do permanent damage to your spine, it is rare but can happen, and on top of that you really dont need it - birth is not that painful. Women have been doing it for many many years with nothing. If they can do it so can you!

Ok i got a Epidural so ill tell you what happen then i'll tell you how i feel about it cause i was scared to at first till i felt that pain from labor lol
Ok 1st they sent everyone out(don't know if that is everywhere)which made me real scared. Next the gave me a shot on my lower back to num it(which really didnt hhurt and im always been scared of needle esp near my back)turn they put a plastic tube in my back that pumped medi. to me ithe pain was alot better almost right away. about 2 hr later i had my son which was a little scaring because i really couldnt feel my self push(so thats one neg.).But it was quick and painless. After it was all over it really got weird cause i couldnt feel my left leg for about a hr so the nurse had to keep checking and working my leg back to normal.
would i say do it im not sure this is my second preg. and i plan on getting pain killers though my iv even though they say it could wear off(that why i didnt do it on my 1st) I'm going to take that chance cause i do have a lot of back problems and im not sure if that was because of the epidural or not. but they do work good luck.

I don't recommend it. I made it through my first pregnancy at 16 without an epidural. I think it's a cheat way unless your having a csection or something is really wrong. It was soo nice because afterwards i could actually feel everything my legs and stuff plus that needle looks really painful and what if they hit a nerve...which sometimes does happen i was watching on tv the other night they hit a girls nerve and paralyzed her and she had to learn to walk and everything again. she was learning to walk around the time her baby was!! Also another girl i know they gave her one and gave her too much and she said she couldnt even breathe or feel her face and ended up having a panic attack and being on oxygen. Sorry they are just not for me even if it does take the edge of its labor it's supposed to hurt!!!

I would recommend going to the class they make you take just so you have the option of getting the epidural if you want it. You can always try to go natural but if you find that the pain is too much for you go ahead and get it. I was natural for all 3 of mine. I didn't have much of a choice in the matter, my labors were all very quick.

I do NOT recommend it. Why? Because you lose total control of your lower half and it may slow down contractions and even stop them in some women. You also lose control over what you can and can't do.
I have had BOTH an epidural AND a home water birth. I recovered and bleed much less with the home water birth and was up and about the next day.

I am going to say no epidural, but that is only because I had a horrible experience and they had a hard time getting the needle in the right spot. So, I was poked like 8-10 times. Took them almost an hour to get it in the right spot. It is almost a year later and I have back pain because of it.

Keep an open mind!!! That's my recommendation. Reasoning: I went in not really wanting an epidural because I knew all the potential negative points to it; however, I also knew the positives. For me, I ended up taking it because:
1. I was induced, so I couldn't walk around to releave the pain and help labor progress.
2. the pain was so intense and I was so tired I couldn't relax enough for labor to really progress.
Once I got the epidural, I could relax. I actually went to sleep for the last 2 hours or so of my labor. When I woke up it was because it was time to push. I strongly believe that without the epidural, my labor would've been much longer and MUCH more difficult.

I do not because I had back labor two out of three times and it did not work for this kind of pain and it slowed down my labor and by baby was borm a bit distressed I have always felt bad for not trying my hardest to push but I probably was you just can't feel the same down there. I don't think having the epidural helped in my cause I only had it once and I believe it mostly hindered. sorry I tried to keep it short.

RECOMMEND!!!
I had an epidural and it was the best thing ever. I was in agony before i had it, gas and air just wasn't helping and neither did pethadine.
The needle going in wasn't painful just a dull ache and as soon as it was in all of my pain was gone.
The only thing that hurt after that was the pushing but it was because of the pressure.

Don't recommend it.
I've heard horror stories of it. A friend of mine got it stuck in her back.
I went natural. The biggest upside is that you can feel everything. Plus you can tell everyone that you did a great job. People will think your super woman if you go natural.
