just for info sake my mother is not a bad parent she has 5 other children who all went to college and have great futures and /or careers. This is not about her not teaching them that there current behavior is wrong she has tried to instill morals into all of her children. (so you should never jump to the conclusion that someone is a bad parent because of one childs horrible bahavior).
Both my nephew and brother are both very troubled kids who are adopted (they are both some kind of drug baby) so they have deeper issues than just wanting to be little hooligans. Jail time will only serve to ake there behavcior worse. (oh and this is coming from there doctor). My mom has also tried talking to a child prosecuter an she was no help at all.

Definitely call the police and explain the situation while the children aren't home. Hopefully they will send over an officer to help handle the situation if anything bring them down to the station quietly and have things explained. If you do it willingly as a parent you will be able to have more leniency in court when your kids are probably sentenced to probation as kids but hey at least you won't lose them and hopefully this will scare them enough to get back on the right path.
As for the gun. That is a serious issue and should be reported IMMEDIATELY.

Well, right now she is protecting a criminal, which would make her a criminal.
For her sake, and yours, I'd encourage you to have her notify the police. Your mother sounds like a very loving and caring woman, and it would be terrible if she were to be put in jail because of your brother and nephew.

Honestly, it's probably too late. Kids need structure from day one, not just after they start to get out of control. These kids sound like prime candidates for prison.
The only course of action now is to get them out of her house --- whether that be detention, foster care, a relative, or whatever. It appears she can't control the kids, so they will only get worse if they stay.

Call the police. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away. She has obviously failed to teach them that stealing is wrong so maybe its time for the judicial system to try.

Open a pawn shop, use the gun on the kids, lol.. naa seriously though. Gotta put your foot down. lock um in, kick um into gear. make them work for what they have. don't let them bully you; regain control. not easy at all.. gonna need patience. you could always try calling supernanny. or simply the police. stealing 'is a crime. Good luck. ;)

I know she won't take this advice, but she should call the police. If she won't do it, you should.
The gun is evidence that they are stepping up to armed robbery. Do you think it is better to wait until they kill someone before they are stopped?
Do what's right and save someone's life.

She needs to call the police and turn the little darlings in. She is only delaying the inevitable.

She needs to turn them in to the police. It sounds cruel, but she would actually be doing them a favor. It might scare them in to shaping up a bit.
