The only use of a hook is to gain commercial appeal...they really do nothing for the song (unless their really good)

I'm buying....I skip over the hook prolly a majority of the time cuz i don't listen to rap to hear catchphrases...

sell...its a format to making a song...hooks keep the attention of the listener...Its kinda like when a movie plays that dramatic music during the car chase or in a soap opera when they do that "da daa da daaaaa" music u kno that something is about to happen...Hooks help ppl identify the song better. Its not always for gimmick reasons....Most songs have a verses, hooks, and sometimes a bridge. If the didnt have a hook it would almost be like rambling on. Thats why most songs do.

Sell: Sometimes a hook makes the song better.

But you ae right, as some songs have the stupidest hooks.

Like Wolves off the new 8 Diagrams Wu album. U-God, Method Man, and Masta Killa ave great verses (yes U-God has a great verse) but the chorus is George Clinton singing about wolves.

Any song written is written to first capture the listener with a hook and then deliver a message. If the gain is commercial appeal, then the writer has performed well.

Sell. The hook helps structure the song, it's part of the music... some songs would sound very jumbled together without one.

Sell...just because MOST song use hooks...even underground rappers...they never get commercial appeal...and MOST of their songs need a hook to make it memorable...If not its just a flow...not really a song...

I think of hooks and I think of Outkast - ATliens.

"Now throw your hands in the air,
And wave 'em like you just don't care,
And if you like fish and grits and all that pimp ****,
Everybody let me hear you say O-Yea-yer"
